Public Domain Nightmares and Success!

July 31, 2013

Mark this moment in time folks! This morning I woke up feeling better than I have in days. Nothing has really changed, I didn’t win a million dollars, didn’t become an overnight success and I didn’t wake up looking like a ravenous model from the pages of a magazine. Last night after eating french fries for dinner I spent three hours in front of my computer working on my GIMP skills. Although there are many tools I’ve yet to master, I have produced a rough (super rough) draft of my book cover.

There it is. I don’t know what to make of it, not sure what I’ll take from this product but here is what I’ve managed to put together on my first go at this. If you’re not impressed, it doesn’t matter neither am I this is a combination of 14 layers and 3 images.  If you are impressed, you ain’t seen nothing yet. This cover has a lot to do with the story because a great deal of things are share between these two characters in his white pickup truck.

While working on this I used an image I found on google search of a girl and guy standing on a pier and cut them out putting them on this keychain picture of a white ford pickup truck. I adjusted the sky from another image and layered on the font. I added drop shadows outlines and finished it off with my name at the bottom. I don’t really think any of these images are public domain and going forward I’m really going to do my research on find images that are free and open to the public.

For those of you as new to this as I am a public domain image is a piece of work in the public domain where someone’s intellectual property rights have expired, have been forfeited, or are inapplicable. In English this means that pictures like Shakespeare and Beethoven, The King James Bible, most of the early silent films, the formula of Newtonian physics, are all images that belong to the public domain.

So my goal is to use these public images on my cover so in the future I don’t run into copy right laws or someone angry with me and asking for money which I assume will happen anyway. In theory Public Domain is one of the traditional safety valves in copyright law. Now if I wanted to buy images I could but some sites want like 50 dollars for two images you have a year to use. Some images, god bless their hearts, are just a dollar and others you need written permission for. All of this is a big chunk of things I have to look into further to weigh my options. For now I’ve been roaming the Stock Exchange at and the StockVault at .

With all this on the mind my goal for today is to check out Amazon and look at a list of books directed at my target audience and see which ones are best sellers. I know that has a lot to do with the context but I want to see what some of these books are looking like. Get an idea of what I can do to pop out a little more.

On a personal level, what made this morning so much better despite being broke on payday, was just seeing this cover. Granted this is not “the cover,” but it’s a book cover and right there on the bottom of that image, in the lower right hand corner is the authors name and its mine. I’m seeing my name in lights, well sort of. It was powerful, it made me tear up and I couldn’t help myself I cranked up a Madonna CD at 5:38am and sang in the shower, I sang getting ready for work and yes in the mirror I shook what my momma gave me!

This moment as fleeting as it is maybe has to be one of those moments I’ll remember for a long time and smile like an idiot because it’s just that ridiculous.

I want to thank everyone again for their support, it means the world to me!
