If you ever wanted to know what it’s like to think like a writer pick up a rubrics cube and try solving it not just once, but consecutively throughout the day.
Because let’s face it, that’s pretty much what’s going on up there. Sure I might stop to make a grocery list or do the dishes every once in a while. But mostly being a writer is about problem solving. And not just any set of problem solving skill will do. This job deals directly with a writer’s ability for creativity which is a critical skill in any field. It focuses on divergent thinking, the ability to develop multiple ideas and concepts to solve problems.
Figuring out what’s next? What’s going to happen after that? Will it matter to the character later down the road? Will you have to get rid of that part with the tree in it? Are your characters developing? How will this change effect the story two chapters from now? Should this conversation be happening yet? Should it happen at all?
It’s almost enough to make your head hurt and on some days it does. But that’s the job, the passion, the talent. I don’t do this for a paycheck, I’ve never done this to make a living or make rent. Writing is my hobby. It’s my craft. If you prick me, true to my art I am going to curse you out like the writer that I am.
