I circled this book like a fat kid circles cake. I don't like reading popular books or movie books. Something about mainstream reading gives me hives. What makes a world so magical if its plaster around everywhere you look?
I watched the movie and ... well I thought my social experience for The DUFF was over.
Wrong. The book is VERY different. In the book version Bianca is having trouble at home, her mom has left and her dad has falling into drinking, something he had quit when she was just a baby. Out of frustration from this and a handful of other things Bianca finds blissful escape in Wesley Rush’s bed. Yeah, I know what this implies, and YES, that is exactly what happens. Normally I’d think such behavior was added simply to shock readers, but in The DUFF if feels real.
The book is just so much better than the movie. The setting I would agree should have been moved to a college atmosphere and I think that's why the movie changed so much of the detail, because this book is to adult for the world it tried to fit into.
Other than that, I'd have to say Wesley Rush is by far my favorite character. You know him already. He's that boy you went to high school with, the boy who could have any girl he wanted (and often did), the one with the blinding smile and the rather small, selfish heart. He could be fun and seem interested, but he couldn't be tamed. So you can imagine Bianca' surprise and suspicion when he actually approaches her. However, unlike the standard good guy with amazing looks story line that many books go for, Wesley's up to no good, and he has no problem telling Bianca exactly what his plans are.
You'll fall for him quietly. You'll know your not supposed to, but you won't be able to help it.
Kody Keplinger captures the directionless decisions typical of a high school girl overwhelmed by and denying her feelings for a seemingly unattainable boy perfectly. Bianca's determination to build a relationship of substance with someone more suitable should resonate deep down with all of us. This is about the heart wanting what it wants even though your brain is telling you what you should want.
This was a really fun read, and once I started it, I couldn't put it down. Everything about this books is my favorite thing in the world. It was a two day read and I'd agree... Best Seller Material.
Seriously, read this book. If you liked the movie read this book. If you like chick flicks read this book. If you like the goofy smile on your face 12 chapters in with a few giggles... READ THIS BOOK.
